Pia’s Wisdom. My Choice

by HelluvaGirl

Pia had one of her brightest moments last week.

We were driving to the kindergarten in the morning and, as I was slowing down at the red lights, she said:

Mummy, those boys and girls don’t know what we want.

I turned my head to see some school kids walking by, and asked:

What boys and girls, Love?

The ones speaking on the radio.

And then I realised she meant the commercial about food supplements that was spinning at the moment. Pia mused on:

They don’t know what food we like, or jewellery… or what clothes we prefer…

I woke up as it dawned on me how amazingly insightful she was at that moment.

Oh, darling, you couldn’t have been more right! They do not know what we want but they always speak as if they do! They suggest we bought things they want us to spend money on, when in fact it’s just us who know what we really want and need.

She’s so, so brilliant, that kid.

The other day, as we were discussing something about other countries and travelling, she said to me:

When you want to rest from me a bit and be alone, I can stay with daddy, and then you go to America and see things there, so that when you return, you could tell me everything.

I looked at her for a while and realised what I want most in this life is to travel everywhere with her. To show her my favourite cities and discover new places together. She is the one person I want to be travelling with.

You are right, Love: I like to be alone sometimes. But you don’t make me tired. And when I go to America, I want to see it with you. And then I want to know what you think.

That said, I sometimes think what changes I have to make to be able to afford it for both of us. How do I make this happen? Work more? If I am able to earn more and afford us more, will it be meaningful to work basically all the time that I am not asleep so that we could go somewhere once or twice a year? Will it make up for all the evenings and weekends that she’ll have to watch cartoons and my back as I lean into the laptop?

Choices come before we know the right answer.
